GATE 2027 Core Exam Pattern
The exam is entirely a Computer-Based Test (CBT) that evaluates your comprehensive understanding across undergraduate technical subjects.

Phase 1: Pre-Registration Requirements:
Before logging into the portal, make sure you complete these foundational steps:
- DigiLocker Setup: Create and verify your account on DigiLocker. This identity verification is strictly mandatory for GATE 2027.
- Document Scan: Scan your valid government photo ID (like an Aadhaar Card, Passport, or PAN Card).
- Photo & Signature: Prepare a recent passport-size color photograph and signature. They must strictly match the pixel dimensions and white-background guidelines specified by IIT Madras.
- Academic Proof: Keep your degree certificate or a declaration form signed by your Head of Department ready if you are still a student.
Phase 2: Step-by-Step Form Submission
Once the GOAPS 2027 registration portal opens, follow these steps:
- Register on GOAPS: Visit the official website, click "New User Register Here," and enter your name, email, and mobile number to generate an Enrollment ID.
- Identity Verification: Log in with your new credentials and link your account via DigiLocker or complete the required live facial verification.
- Fill Personal Details: Input your date of birth, gender, nationality, and category (General/OBC/SC/ST).
- Enter Academic Details: Specify your college address, graduation status, and roll/enrollment number.
- Select GATE Papers: Choose whether you are taking one or two papers. If taking two, select a valid combination from the approved paper list.
- Choose Exam Cities: Select up to three preferred exam cities from the same IIT Zone.
- Upload Certificates: Upload your scanned photograph, signature, ID proof, and category certificates (if applicable).
Phase 3: Fee Payment & Final Submission
- Review Form: Carefully check the preview of your application. You cannot modify your name, paper, or city choices easily after payment.
- Online Payment: Pay the registration fee using Net Banking, UPI, Credit Card, or Debit Card.
- Download Confirmation: Print or save the generated application PDF containing your unique Application Number for future reference.
Mandatory Documents for Registration

- Identification: Valid Government ID (Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, PAN Card).
- Photograph & Signature: Must strictly match the official pixel dimension and background rules specified by IIT Madras.
- Certificates: Category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL) or PwD certificates if applicable.

Score Validity & Cutoff Dynamics
- 3-Year Validity: Your GATE 2027 scorecard is legally valid for three years from the exact date of result declaration (valid until March 2030).
- Two Cutoffs Exist:
- Qualifying Cutoff: The minimum marks required to pass the exam, issued officially by IIT Madras (varies by category).
- Admission/Recruitment Cutoff: The higher merit score required by individual IITs for M.Tech seats or by PSUs like ONGC/NTPC for interviews.
Exam Day Environment
- Virtual Calculator: No physical calculators are allowed. A digital, on-screen scientific calculator is embedded into the test interface.
- Scribble Pad: You will be provided with a physical scribble pad for rough work. It must be returned to the invigilator at the end of the 3-hour test.
